Aquatic therapy is the skilled practice of physical therapy done in the water and can be used to address your child’s neurological, genetic, developmental and/or orthopedic disorders. Some benefits of aquatic therapy include but are not limited to muscle strengthening, increasing/maintaining range of motion, relief of pain and/or muscle spasm, and muscle re-education. The use of aquatic therapy can also assist in the development of perceptual and sensory awareness, improvement of balance, coordination, and posture, as well as enhance respiratory function. The decrease of the gravitational effect in the water can create an environment in which your child feels independent. For further information regarding aquatic therapy, please visit the Aquatic Physical Therapy section of the APTA website www.aquaticpt.org.
