Katie Schmalz, MS, OTR/L
Katie received her B.S. in psychology from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY and she earned her M.S. in Occupational therapy from Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, CA. In college, Katie volunteered with the Big Brother/Big Sister program and at a home for at risk youth boys. Prior to attending graduate school, Katie worked as an aide in an elementary school special day class for 6 years. Katie began to hone her skills as a pediatric OT, while attending Samuel Merritt University, by participating in the student run pediatric clinic, and later by working with California Children Services and with the West Contra Costa Unified School District. Katie has experience working with children with various diagnoses including but not limited to autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing disorder, dysgraphia, Fragile X syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Prader Willi Syndrome, ADHD and Down Syndrome. She has training in the Handwriting without Tears program and the Sequential Oral Sensory (S.O.S.) approach to feeding. Katie has a strong passion for working with children and she enjoys using creativity to develop fun and exciting ways to facilitate achievement of goals.
